China to Train Over 450 Liberians in 2026 ---- As Embassy Urges Trainees to Drive National Development

MONROVIA, Liberia — August 12, 2026: More than 450 Liberians are expected to benefit from China’s human resources development and training programs this year, representing a 25 percent increase over the previous year, Chinese Ambassador to Liberia Yin Chengwu has disclosed.

Ambassador Yin made the disclosure Wednesday at the Chinese Embassy in Monrovia during a reception for Liberian trainees who have returned from training programs in China and others preparing to travel for upcoming training opportunities.

The reception brought together government officials, including Unity Party National Chairman Dr. J. Luther Tarpeh and Deputy Foreign Minister Dr. Ibrahim Nyei, along with former and prospective trainees, development stakeholders and members of the media.

Ambassador Yin described China’s human resources development program as an important component of China’s foreign assistance and a major avenue for strengthening the capacity of developing countries.

He said China has designed specialized training opportunities for Liberia based on the country’s development needs and priorities under the Government’s ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development (AAID).

The programs, according to the ambassador, cover areas including diplomacy, agriculture, public health, education, political party development, poverty reduction and media communication.

Liberian participants have also been recommended for seminars covering fiscal regulation, women’s entrepreneurship, infant nutrition, environmental protection, wetland conservation, artificial intelligence and e-commerce.

Focus on Skills Development

Ambassador Yin said the training initiative reflects China’s emphasis on helping developing countries build their own capacity rather than simply providing short-term assistance.

He explained that the objective is to equip participants with knowledge and practical skills that can strengthen Liberia’s human capital and contribute to sustainable economic and social development.

“Teaching a man to fish” remains an important principle behind the program, he said, noting that training programs are designed around the actual needs and priorities of partner countries.

The ambassador urged Liberians preparing to travel to China to take full advantage of the opportunity by studying diligently, learning from China’s development experience and engaging with people from different backgrounds.

However, he cautioned returning trainees against simply attempting to copy China's development model in Liberia.

He encouraged them to adapt lessons learned in China to Liberia’s own history, culture, institutions and socioeconomic realities.

“International learning is not about imitation, but about adaptation,” Ambassador Yin said, stressing that Liberia must develop solutions suited to its own circumstances.

Trainees Urged to Contribute to Liberia

Beyond acquiring qualifications, Ambassador Yin challenged the trainees to become active contributors to Liberia’s development.

He said Liberia possesses abundant natural resources and significant development potential, but realizing that potential will require skilled, committed and innovative citizens.

He encouraged beneficiaries to apply the knowledge and skills gained through the training programs to their respective professions and communities.

The ambassador also called on the trainees to become ambassadors of China-Liberia friendship, using their experiences to strengthen people-to-people relations between the two countries.

He said the exchange programs have helped Liberians and Chinese citizens better understand each other while creating stronger foundations for bilateral cooperation.

This year's programs, he noted, are particularly significant as 2026 marks the China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges, providing an opportunity to deepen interactions and mutual understanding between China and African countries.

Deepening China-Liberia Partnership

Ambassador Yin linked the human resources program to China's broader Global Development Initiative, saying capacity building and knowledge-sharing are important tools for advancing sustainable development and international cooperation.

He said China would continue working with Liberia to implement agreements reached between the two countries' leaders, expand practical cooperation and strengthen people-to-people exchanges.

He described Liberia and China as “good friends, good partners and good brothers,” despite the geographical distance separating the two countries.

The ambassador expressed confidence that Liberian trainees would use their experiences to contribute to national development while helping strengthen the longstanding friendship between Liberia and China.

He also encouraged returned trainees to share their experiences with other Liberians and prospective beneficiaries to broaden the impact of the programs.

The reception concluded with Ambassador Yin wishing both returning and prospective trainees success in their studies and careers, while reaffirming China's commitment to expanding human resources development cooperation with Liberia.
